Cleveland Clinic Offers New AutoLITT Laser Technology to Treat Previously Inoperable Brain Tumors

Cleveland Clinic’s Rose Ella Burkhardt Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center announces the availability of AutoLITT™ advanced laser technology treatment for brain tumors. AutoLITT now offers patients with previously inoperable brain tumors, such as glioblastomas, a minimally invasive surgical treatment option known as laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT). AutoLITT uses a diode laser (solid state laser) that produces infrared heat, which subsequently heats the tissue next to it. AutoLITT advances previous technologies by allowing the surgeon to put a laser probe deep into the brain with great precision; once the probe is deeply placed, it is used to heat the tumor in different directions and monitor the heating process. This is done using special intra-operative MRI techniques that measure the temperature and show what part of the tumor is really “cooked” while allowing nearby normal brain tissue to be spared.

Before AutoLITT there was a greater risk of damaging the brain during delicate surgical procedures, according to Dr. Barnett. “The laser technologies themselves aren’t new — they’ve been around for a couple of decades, but they were primitive and did not allow as much monitoring as this technology does,” he said. “Also, we weren’t able to steer the laser beam in such a way that we could adapt to different shapes and sizes of tumors very well. AutoLITT offers the benefits of surgery to a whole group of patients who otherwise couldn’t safely get surgery, so for many patients, this is a major advancement. This is much less invasive than even our most minimally invasive open operations.”

Since AutoLITT was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2009, Cleveland Clinic has performed more of these procedures than any other hospital in the country. The kitchen is one of the hottest selling points for any listing, as it is the center for a lot of activity within a home. While you may renovate your kitchen before selling—or at least replace outdated appliances and add some fresh paint—staging is another crucial part of making your kitchen buyer-ready. Below, Matthew Rand, Managing Partner of Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty shares some important tips for staging your kitchen.

Make it sparkle. “Cleaning your kitchen top to bottom is the first step in home staging,” says Rand. Polish all fixtures, clean out the inside of the stove, dust that ceiling fan, wash windows, scrub your baseboards, clean cabinets and polish or replace knobs and handles.

De-clutter. Remove all appliances from the counter, take magnets and photos off the fridge and most of the photos off the wall. Don’t remove everything, or it will look cold and unlived in. Instead, allow an opportunity for the buyer to imagine their own lives enfolding in the room.

Make use of space and color. Replace your large kitchen table with a smaller one to make the space seem roomier. Replace heavy drapes with lighter ones to brighten the room. Make sure your color scheme is subtle and complimentary, not extreme or jarring. “The less things shoved into your space, the larger it will look. Put something simple, like a cookbook or bowl of fruit on the counter or kitchen table,” suggests Rand .

Sweat the small stuff. Go above and beyond to make your kitchen look like a place where your potential buyers will want to spend time. Try not to cook anything with a strong odor in your kitchen during the time your house is on the market, like fish, bacon or curry. Of course, baking some fresh bread has always been a go-to home selling secret. “Also, be sure never to leave any dirty dishes in the sink or the dishwasher. Sellers like to open things, and your dishwasher is not excluded from this. Don’t turn them off with last night’s dinner dishes ,” recommends Rand .

Parker Waichman LLP Files Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Lawsuit on Behalf of Plaintiff Claiming Elevated Cobalt, Chromium Levels From DePuy ASR Hip Implant

Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of people injured by defective medical devices, has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Virginia resident who sustained serious injuries, allegedly due to a defective metal-on-metal ASR Hip Implant manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics. The lawsuit was filed on April 12, 2012 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, in the DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2197. (Case No. 1:10 mdl 2197).

In August 2010 DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, issued a worldwide recall of the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR Acetabular System, after data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales showed that 1 out of every 8 patients (12%-13%) who had received the devices had to undergo revision surgery within five years of receiving it. According to the complaint filed by Parker Waichman LLP, the Plaintiff, a 62-year-old woman from Ferrum, Virginia, received a DePuy ASR Hip Implant on October 10, 2007. By February 2011, the Plaintiff was suffering from pain, as well as elevated chromium and cobalt levels due to her metal-on-metal DePuy ASR Hip Implant. The lawsuit seeks, among other things, compensatory and punitive damages, as well as medical monitoring.

The complaint was one of several filed by Parker Waichman LLP on April 12 in the Northern District of Ohio on behalf of individuals allegedly injured by the DePuy ASR Hip Implant. Since the DePuy ASR Hip Implant recall, thousands of similar lawsuits have been filed against DePuy and Johnson & Johnson by ASR Hip Implant recipients who allegedly suffered serious injuries due to the recalled devices.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is currently conducting a safety review of metal-on-metal hip implants, including DePuy’s ASR Hip Implant. Last May, the FDA directed 21 companies that market all-metal hip replacements, including DePuy, to conduct post-market studies of their products to determine if they were shedding dangerous amounts of metallic debris in patients. The agency recently announced that its Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Panel will meet over June 27 and 28 to discuss the risks and benefits of metal-on-metal hip systems, as well as potential patient and practitioner recommendations for their use. In March, a large study published in The Lancet showed that there is a 6.2 percent chance patients with all-metal hips will need a replacement within five years. "Metal-on-metal stemmed articulations give poor implant survival compared with other options and should not be implanted," the study authors wrote. The month prior, a report in the British Medical Journal revealed that metal-on-metal hip implant manufacturers were aware of mounting evidence linking the devices to serious, long-term health consequences, but for years failed to warn the public about these dangers. The report warned that hundreds of thousands of people around the world may have been exposed to dangerously high levels of toxic and potentially cancer-causing metals from failing metal-on-metal hip implants. Düsseldorf’s Jazz Rally turns 20 and is Biggest Ever

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY (PRWEB) April 26, 2012

Music lovers at the 20th Düsseldorf Jazz Rally, May 25-27, will be dazzled by the two decade old quality program, style and unique format. Visitors can “hop” from concert to concert on one ticket, and this year’s program is a record total of 92 concerts in 35 venues, featuring concerts in styles that range from “jazz pure” to funk, soul, blues, and rock. More than 300,000 visitors are expected.

Jazz legend Klaus Doldinger is a patron of the event and also performs twice during the festival. Other headliners include Irish singer-songwriter Rea Garvey, Estonian-American conductor Kristjan Järvi and American jazz trombonist Jiggs Whigham. Moreover, genre stars like Nils Landgren, Candy Dulfer, and the New York Voices are regular performers at the festival, as are Jan Delay, Clueso, and “Die fantastischen Vier” (the Fantastic Four). Several artists from the US will be part of the program, including Kyle Eastwood, actor Clint Eastwood’s son.

For the first time this year, the festival includes two talent searches, one for young jazz musicians and the other for bands. The winner of the band contest will open the legendary Friday-night opening event located at Airport Hangar 8 at Düsseldorf International Airport. In fact, the 92 concerts will take place on a dazzling variety of stages such as train stations, rustic breweries and 5-star hotels. Most are in walking distance from each other and turn Düsseldorf into one large jazz venue for the weekend.

Düsseldorf’s Tonhalle, a planetarium-turned-concert space, is the location of one of the most unusual concerts in the festival. In collaboration with Schumann Fest 2012, two jazz orchestras will perform a “classic jazz” concert and give Schumannfest a jazzy note.

Düsseldorf has what’s known as the “longest bar in the world” – rows and rows of pubs and restaurants in the city’s historic old town, more than 260 of them, and bar-hopping might as well have been invented here. All year long, visitors and locals alike enjoy the short distances from bar to bar, and on many nights, the old town seems like one big party place for eating and drinking. It was a natural step to offer the same options and convenience for jazz lovers.

Jazz lovers can advance-purchase the “Jazz-Rally-Button,” an all-access event pass, for € 29 – 35, which grants admission to all scheduled concerts. Day passes are available for € 29.
