Under a delayed arrival status, the OPM will indicate how many hours late employees may report for work. For instance, if the status monitor indicates a delayed arrival policy of two hours, this means that anyone expected to report normally at 7 a.m. may report to work as late as 9 a.m.

An unscheduled leave notification indicates that employees are allowed to simply notify their supervisors of their intent to take unscheduled leave (leave taken without prior approval). Unscheduled leave is only coupled with an Open status, which means that anyone who doesn’t want to come to work must take leave in order to have the day off.

United States Government Employees Time Off Rules

The United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) posted a document on its website that outlines dismissal and closure procedures (for emergency situations) for federal government offices located inside the Washington, D.C. Capital Beltway. The rules listed in this document apply to federal employees located in that area, but specifically exclude employees of the United States Postal service, the government of D.C., and private company employees, including government contractors.
